Roblox Safety Guide
Roblox is a blast for kids, but only with the right guardrails. The platform has solid safety features — they just don't turn themselves on. Here's what every parent should set up before handing over the tablet.
Start With a Proper Account Setup
Use a real birthdate — under-13 accounts get tighter privacy defaults you can't get later. Attach a parent's email for recovery and a strong unique password. Then turn on 2-Step Verification. A leaked password alone won't unlock the account, and that stops the vast majority of takeovers.
Account Restrictions + the PIN That Matters
Flip on Account Restrictions in Privacy Settings. This locks the account to a curated list of experiences and disables chat and trading. Then set a Parent PIN — without it, a clever kid (or their friend) can undo everything in seconds.
Privacy Settings Worth Tweaking
- Set "Who can message me?" to Friends or Nobody
- Set "Who can chat with me in-app?" to Friends or Nobody
- Set "Who can see my inventory?" to Friends or Nobody
- Disable "Account is visible in search" for lower visibility
- Turn off "Who can invite me to private servers" for younger players
Managing Spending and Screen Time
Robux purchases go through the app store or Roblox directly. Set a monthly allowance via Premium instead of leaving a card on file, and use your device's built-in screen-time limits. Check transaction history monthly — unexpected charges usually mean someone else got hold of the account.
Chat: What's Filtered and What Isn't
Roblox filters chat for inappropriate content by default, and it's stricter for under-13 accounts. You can kill chat entirely from the Privacy tab. Voice chat requires age verification and won't work on under-13 accounts — don't help a child bypass that check.
Scams and Bad Actors — What to Watch For
- Never share your password — Roblox staff will never ask for it
- Free Robux generators are always scams
- "Free items" links lead to phishing sites
- Only trade through the official Roblox trade system
- Watch for adults pushing off-platform contact (Discord, Snapchat) — report and block
Your Account Got Hacked — Now What?
Move fast: change the password, enable 2SV, log out all sessions, and contact Roblox support with the original email and any purchase receipts. Recovery is way easier when you can prove ownership with a receipt or a recovery email tied to the account.
